3 or 4 years using AI for coding (and many other things.) Who has learned more? AI or us?

Is it now 3 or 4 years that we’ve been using AI for coding(and many other things)? Who has learned more skills, AI or you?

Personally I was very conservative, but since December 2025 I switched to outsourcing the coding in great deal to agents. And now in August 2026, almost 7 months have past and I realized something very crucial: I have wasted partially 7 months letting my coding skills atrophy, and I have not always moved faster in the projects I work for.

I’m recognizing that the trap is real: we get convinced AI can do this faster and better than us, then we go into doing the training work for the AI companies for free next to paying them for the compute. We have been helping their models to improve while we scrutinize their coding work (if we do it at all).

But how are we helping other humans and ourselves to improve?

Do you see the trap?

I’m just sharing this thought with you as a WARNING. I personally went back to doing a part of the coding on my own ways, because I won’t move faster or slower, but like this I want to make sure I’m not delegating the thinking to machines, and gifting the learning to big corporations.

If you are in this, you are a CS student, or a dev, or a creative in tech, or a builder, and are hesitant whether humans should keep coding by hand, or learning to code by hand, and learning the skills around Software Engineering, and able to read code… and if you are struggling with the motivation to do that, my answer to that, is a simple big bold:

YES, LEARN! keep learning to code, keep reading and learning to read, and writing, and THINKING!

You will be better off in any possible future knowing how things are done, how stuff is articulated, built, written, in depth. You will be a better human if you can make things work with your bare hands, with your human peers, with your own and your collective brain.

Don’t take my word, listen to Stanford CS Professor Chris Piech explain it better than I ever could!
