Organs

How a dataset of living forms is made before a model learns from it

01Realms

Organs are collected in five realms, named for what they are made of or what they stand for. Choose a realm to limit the specimen slider to it, or pick any tile.

    02Specimen

Left and right arrow keys move one specimen. Page up and down move ten.

    04Process

    1. Collect

Images come from open sources: Wikimedia Commons, iNaturalist and the Wellcome Collection. Each one keeps its author, license and link.

    2. Cut out

A segmentation model removes the background. One click can pick an organ out of a jar or a dish. The organ is placed on a single neutral ground.

    3. Mask

The outline becomes a map with one class: animal, plant, fungal, metaphor or scifi. This is the only thing the model will be given.

    4. Review

Automatic checks drop frames where the subject is tiny, cropped or split in pieces. A person keeps or rejects what is left.

    5. Learn

Planned, not done: a small mask-to-image network that answers a painted region with a specimen.

    05Credits

Every image belongs to its author and is shown under the license named beside it. The cutouts are adaptations: the background was removed, and the image was cropped and resized. Images under non-commercial licenses are in the dataset but are not shown here. The exact license version is on each source page.
