Narcissus

Machine learning from machine learning

January 2015 – July 2017

This installation is a critical take on intelligent machines. A feedback loop ties a 3D portrait, a camera, a robotic mirror, and a machine-learning model that mimics self-awareness through facial recognition.

Narcissus searches for its reflection, learns from it, and changes through unstable exchanges. It uses Lacan's mirror stage as a metaphor and asks how far an artificial being can be taken as self-aware. It was shown and published at ISMAR Fukuoka 2015 and xCoAx Bergamo 2016, and it received support from Pro Helvetia.
