Unlocking Colonial Archive

Decolonisation of Cartography

February 2020 – ongoing

I have been working with researchers at Lancaster University, Liverpool John Moores University, and the University of Texas at Austin on "Unlocking the Colonial Archive: Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Indigenous and Spanish American Historical Collections," supported by ESRC and NEH grants.

The research treats space, cartography, and decolonisation together. My part is an open machine-learning approach, based on a semantic-segmentation model, for classifying cartographic data from historical archives.
