Public Property is a multimedia installation about control and transparency of digital data, made with Jan Huggenberg for Playground in London. We use digital services every day, yet the mechanisms underneath are not fully comprehensible. Transparency matters if we want a healthy awareness of how personal data is transferred and shared. We risk becoming puppets of an economy that promises to make life simpler and more entertaining.
The centrepiece is an automated puppet in the window front, a symbol of the unaware user in a technologised world. Its parts are moved by motors that respond to public data collected about the visitor. A collage of the results is projected onto tiles and reflected back into the room, making fragments of the data visible to the audience. The installation turned Playground into a mediated space.
18–26 October 2017, Playground, London. The opening included a live coding performance by Swan Panda, Julian Stadon and Jorge Ramírez.
